It is scary enough to have to deal with debt collectors calling to obtain money that you don’t have, but having them claim to have government authority is almost worse. According to this act debt collectors cannot use: “…The false representation or implication that the debt collector is vouched for, bonded by, or affiliated with the United States or any State, including the use of any badge, uniform, or facsimile thereof…” There is no formal authority for the debt collector to have to force you in to making payments.
