Can a Debt Collector Call Repeatedly?
Debt collectors are notorious for trying to get a hold of you or your family at the worst possible time to collect on debts. The idea from the debt collector’s point of view is that they could coerce or harass you into finally making a payment just to stop the calls. While this was an almost acceptable practice for sometime, it is no longer acceptable according to the “Fair Debt Collections Practices Act”.
According to the act: “…Causing a telephone to ring or engaging any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with intent to annoy, abuse, or harass any person at the called number…” is not acceptable. You have the right to end the phone call without having to pay any debt and you also have the right to continue to live regardless of if you have debts weighing you down.
These acts were put in place by the government to try to convince people that it is ok to continue to go on living with debts. It is not an acceptable practice for a debt collector to threaten to harm you or your family or to harm your reputation. Repeated calls are not acceptable and you should report a debt collector for harassment if they will not leave you and your family alone.
